Grammys Trivia: Difference Between Record & Song of the Year Explained

Share Content

The 2022 Grammy Awards ceremony is taking place this weekend and some fans might be curious to know the difference between Record of the Year and Song of the Year.

Two of the night’s biggest categories might seem like the same thing to some, but there’s actually a big difference.

If you don’t know, Record of the Year is awarded to both the performer of the song, as well as the recording engineers who took part in the production of the song. The Record of the Year highlights the performance and the production of the song.

Song of the Year, however, is awarded to the writer of the song, not the artist that sings the song. Every song nominated this year has a writing credit for the performer, which is not always the case.

Album of the Year used to go to just the artist, however, now it goes to the artist and producers, sound engineers, mixers, and songwriters.
