Just days before the tragic accident on the set of his movie Rust, Jensen Ackles was talking about preparing to use guns for the film and the safety protocols set in place.

The 43-year-old Supernatural actor was officially announced as a cast member on the same day of the accident, but he talked about his new job while at a fan convention last week.

For those who don’t know, a prop gun was discharged on set by Alec Baldwin and it killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and seriously injured director Joel Souza.

While at the fan convention, Jensen talked about having to be on set the next day.

“I’ve got a 6 a.m. call tomorrow to have a big shootout. They had me pick my gun, they were like, ‘Alright, what gun would you like?’ and I was like, ‘I don’t know?’ and the armorer was like, ‘Do you have gun experience?’” Jensen said (via Entertainment Weekly).

He added, “I was like, ‘A little.’ And she’s like, ‘Okay, well, this is how you load it, this is how we check it and make sure it’s safe.’”

Jensen also talked about practicing with the gun.

“So she’s like, ‘Okay I’m gonna put some blanks in there and I want you to just go and fire off a couple rounds towards the hill.’ And I was like, ‘Okay,’” he said. “So I put the belt on, I put the gun there, and I walked out and she’s like, ‘Just make sure that you know, you pull the hammer all the way back and you aim at your target.’ And I was like, ‘Okay I got it.’”

Jensen then said how he demonstrated to the prop woman that he knew how to operate a gun. He added, “And no kidding, she goes, ‘you’re an a–hole.’”

New details have surfaced about the prop gun that was used on set.
