Ed Sheeran is opening up about the special meaning behind the cover of his brand new album, = (Equals), which was released today.
The 30-year-old singer and songwriter spoke to Zane Lowe during an Apple Music First Listen event, and revealed that there is a double meaning behind having butterflies surrounding the graffitied equals sign.

Ed revealed that the butterflies hold a special meaning to him, and signify two big events that happened in his life.
“I’ve spent a lot of my 20’s questioning who am I, why am I here, why do I do this, if I’m a singer what do I add to the world, it’s so much questioning,” he started out. “I’ve turned 30 and I feel like some of these questions have started to have answers but they started to have answers through two very, very massive moments in my life.”
Ed explained that those events are his daughter Lyra “being born, which is new life and, one, my friend Michael [Gudinski] dying, which is death.”
“Both hit me in a way where you appreciate tomorrow more because of each one, if that makes sense, and I saw the symbol ‘equals.’ An equals symbol is the end of a question and the start of an answer, it’s in the middle of the two. I definitely feel like being 30 I’m on either sides.”
He continued on, “In my 20’s there’s a lot of question, in my 30’s there’s a lot of answers, so the butterflies were essentially from a chrysalis, new life. It came to me one day, I don’t know why, but I have a lot of things come to me when I go running and I think it’s because your creative side of your brain sort of opens when you have nothing else to focus on.”
