ABC has revealed that another fan-favorite character from Grey’s Anatomy will be returning to the show this season during next week’s episode!
The return of the character was revealed during a promo on Thursday night (March 25).
Throughout the season, Ellen Pompeo‘s character Meredith Grey has been reuniting with several of the show’s dead character on a magical beach that has been described as an “in between place” while she battles COVID-19.
The other characters that have already returned during season 17 are Patrick Dempsey‘s Derek and T.R. Knight‘s George. Living characters like Chandra Wilson‘s Bailey and James Pickens Jr.‘s Richard have also popped up at the beach.

Chyler Leigh’s Lexie Grey!
Chyler Leigh will return to the show as Meredith’s younger half-sister Lexie Grey, who died in a plane crash in the season eight finale.
“We’ve carefully designed that beach so that whatever your belief system is, that beach fits into it,” showrunner Krista Vernoff told The Hollywood Reporter. “For me, that is a real place that exists in between; it’s an in between place where Meredith can hang out and the dead people she loves can visit her. That’s where it started. But not everybody believes in a life beyond this body.”
“Those scenes are carefully designed so that any time anyone appears on that beach, they are also in Meredith’s [hospital] room and/or the information that Meredith would need to imagine them on that beach has happened in Meredith’s room or earshot,” she added. “When you saw Bailey and Richard join Meredith and George on that beach, they were in her hospital room with her talking. The idea is if you don’t believe in this magical place, you can imagine that Meredith is creating this space in her own imagination based on the information that she has in that hospital room that she’s hearing.”
