Heading into the final season of the hit Netflix series 13 Reasons Why, fans have been buzzing about the fate of Brandon Flynn‘s character Justin Foley.
Justin has faced a rough life throughout the series and things seemed to be getting better for him when he agreed to go to rehab at the end of season 3.
So, what happened in the show’s final season?

The fourth and final season starts with a funeral and we don’t know whose funeral it is until the finale. Unfortunately, it’s Justin Foley’s funeral.
Justin arrives home from rehab at the beginning of season four and it seems like he’s a changed person, but when he sees his ex-girlfriend Jessica (Alisha Boe) with her new boyfriend Diego (Jan Luis Castellanos), things start to take a bad turn again.
While attending prom, Justin collapses and is taken to the hospital, where we find out that he has been diagnosed with HIV-1. He contracted the virus while he was homeless and relying on sex work to get by and he was also misusing substances. The virus had already been in his body for a while when he was diagnosed because Justin refused to be tested for it, so it progressed into AIDS.
Justin died in the hospital while Clay (Dylan Minnette) was holding his hand and Clay’s parents stood by in the room. Jessica also had an emotional goodbye and told Justin that he was the love of her life.
While cleaning Justin’s locker out after graduation, Clay discovered Justin’s college essay in which he talked about Clay being a positive influence on his life and how he considered him a brother.
