Former NFL Star Lem Barney Is Still Alive After False Death Report, His Son Confirms

Lem Barney is not dead following a inaccurate report saying otherwise.

The 80-year-old retired NFL player’s son confirmed he is still alive after the Pro Football Hall of Fame shared an email reporting he had died.

Lem‘s son Lem Jr told Detroit Free Press writer Dave Birkett that his father is definitely alive, and said he just saw him on Thanksgiving.

“OK. Talked to Lem Barney‘s son. He said Lem is alive. He said he Lem saw on Thanksgiving, started getting messages asking about his dad last night. He said he talked to Lem‘s nurse today, had her send a selfie, heard his voice in the background. ‘He’s good … He is alive,’” Dave shared on Twitter/X.

Lem Jr said this is the second time in a few months he’s had to address false rumors about his dad’s passing. Said it happened after the flood in Texas earlier this year. ‘It’s like the boy who cried wolf sh-t now,’” he added.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame explained their error in a statement to People.

“Based on conflicting information regarding the reported passing of Lem Barney, the Pro Football Hall of Fame is rescinding the email sent earlier today,” PFHOF said. “The Hall has not been able to confirm such news independently. Please accept our apology.”

Lem Barney played 11 seasons in the NFL with the Detroit Lions, from 1967-1977 and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1992.
