Jessie J Opens Up About Her Health Struggles, Reveals She Had a Stroke at 17

Jessie J is opening up about some of the medical challenges she’s faced.

The 37-year-old singer told The Guardian in a new interview that she had a stroke shortly after she got her first record deal. It seemed to become a pattern for her, that she would achieve something significant in her career and it would be followed by a health scare.

“I just got my first record deal, and I had a stroke,” Jessie explained. “Then when I was about to put out music in 2020 I had a car crash and my larynx moved up and I couldn’t sing for a year.”

“Honestly, I feel life goes, ‘You having a good time? Sit down.’ Ever since I was a child, it has always gone alongside moments of success for me; something severe or obscure has happened to my health,” she said.

Even before that, when she was just 11 and making her West End debut, the “I’ll Never Know Why” singer was diagnosed with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome and would be “in and out of rehearsals on an IV drip” before returning to the “hospital at night.”

This year, she revealed an early breast cancer diagnosis in June and then had surgery not long after. She performed onstage for the first time since the surgery in September.
