After all of the negative things that Donald Trump has said about New York City’s future mayor, Zohran Mamdani, it’s surprising to see he has now changed his tune.
The President of the United States met with Mamdani in the Oval Office on Friday afternoon (November 21) at the White House in Washington, D.C.
After the meeting, Trump praised Mamdani while speaking to the press.

“You know, we had some interesting conversation, and some of his ideas are really the same ideas that I have. But a big thing on cost. You know, the new word is ‘affordability.’ Another word is just ‘groceries.’ It’s sort of an old-fashioned word but it’s very accurate. And they’re coming down,” Trump said (via CBS).
Trump said that Mamdani “actually surprised me.”
“He wants to see no crime, he wants to see housing being built, he wants to see rents coming down – all things that I agree with,” Trump added. “He wants to have a safe New York. Ultimately, a safe New York is going to be a great New York.”
Trump was asked if he would “feel comfortable” to live in New York while Mamdani is in office.
He responded, “Yeah, I would, I really would. Especially after the meeting, absolutely. We agree on a lot more than I would have thought. I want him to do a great job, and we’ll help him do a great job. You know, he might have different views, but in many ways — you know, we were discussing, when Bernie Sanders was out of the race, I picked up a lot of his votes, and people had no idea, because he was strong on not getting ripped off on trade and lots of things that I’ve practiced and been very successful on.”
Trump said he “enjoyed” the meeting.
“There will be topics that we disagree on. I think we’ll probably come to a conclusion,” he said. “And ultimately, he’ll convince me or I’ll convince him. You know, it’s for the good of New York. Ultimately, it’s for the good of New York. I don’t care about affiliations or parties or anything else. I want to see — if this city could be unbelievable, if he could be a spectacular success, I’d be very happy.”
Trump has gone viral this week for the comments he made about a reporter, which his administration has defended.
