‘Last Christmas’ Lyrics & Song Meaning: Wham! Holiday Classic Is Going Viral Again

“Last Christmas” is one of the great Christmas classics, and it seems to only be growing in popularity each year!

The song was released all the way back in 1984, and featured on the group’s final studio album, Music from the Edge of Heaven.

The upbeat track is actually somber lyrically, telling the tale of being broken up with just one day after Christmas. The song peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2024, which is its highest position to date. Can it beat that record this year?

“Last Christmas” was written by the late, great George Michael.

Bandmate Andrew Ridgeley opened up about the track years later in an interview.

“The first time I ever heard it, it was absolutely knockout. It sounded for all the world like a Christmas classic. It’s Christmas distilled if you ask me. It’s the essence of Christmas,” he told People.

“And so, its enduring nature, its perennial nature isn’t really a surprise. But it’s a wonderful privilege to have had bestowed upon Wham!, to have one of the all-time Christmas classics — which I think it’s fair to say it probably is now.”

Andrew also spoke out when the track finally hit No. 1 in the UK in 2023, years after George’s death.

“Last Christmas has finally ascended to the much-cherished and sought-after Official Christmas Number 1, which was always the main goal. George would be beside himself [that] after all of these years, [we’ve] finally obtained Christmas Number 1. Yog [George] said that he wrote ‘Last Christmas’ with the intention of writing a Christmas Number 1. It’s mission accomplished!” he said to Official Charts.
