Are the Olympics Issuing Transgender Ban? International Olympic Committee Responds to Report

A report was published this morning alleging that the International Olympic Committee (aka the IOC) would be announcing a ban on “transgender women in female competition.”

The Times published this report, suggesting that Dr. Jane Thornton, the medical and scientific director for the IOC, presented the findings of a study at a recent meeting that suggested that “scientific evidence showed there were physical advantages to being born male that remained with athletes, including those who had taken treatment to reduce testosterone levels.”

However, the IOC has now released a statement in response to the report.

They did confirm to ESPN that the IOC members did get an update of the research, but, the spokesperson added, “The working group is continuing its discussions on this topic and no decisions have been taken yet. Further information will be provided in due course.”

Previously, individual sports were allowed to make their own decisions regarding transgender athletes as long as there was “no presumption of advantage.”

The next Olympics are set to take place in 2026 from Friday, February 6, 2026 – Sunday, February 22, 2026.
