Ghost Hunters star Steve Gonsalves is sharing what he believes to be his scariest experience to date.
According to a new interview with E! News, that honor goes to a former tuberculosis hospital called Waverly Hills Sanatorium, located in Louisville, Kentucky. It might be the ultimate destination for intrepid ghost hunters looking to test their limits.

“It’s going to be a place called Waverly Hills in Louisville, Ky., and it was a tuberculosis hospital, very sad but over 60,000 people died there in just a three-year period,” Steve told the outlet.
“The frequency of activity there is incredibly high and it’s always right in front of you, apparitions moving around, doors slamming. Things moving, voices yelling out of thin air and it happens as soon as you walk in.”
For some additional context, Waverly Hills first opened in the early 1900s in Jefferson County during a severe tuberculosis outbreak. The massive five-story facility treated hundreds of patients before closing in 1961 after antibiotics made TB sanatoriums obsolete, per the official website.
Over time, stories of eerie voices, unexplained movements, and ghostly sightings turned the building into one of America’s most infamous haunted locations, a must-visit for paranormal enthusiasts.
The building still functions as a tourist hotspot, offering historical and paranormal tours, private investigations, and other events.
Given the building’s history of illness, loss, and isolation, it’s easy to understand why Waverly Hills has attracted ghost hunters like Steve. Despite allegedly experiencing many paranormal encounters, he says this particular outing has really stuck with him.
“I cried. I wanted to go there for so long and it’s so beautiful and it’s gorgeous. You come up this creepy drive with all the trees shrouding it and, when you see it just reveal itself, I started getting emotional. It’s just absolutely beautiful.”
Steve continued, “The sadness that happened there and the grief… you get a little emotional. I thought it was fantastic.”
For those who would rather seek their thrills and chills at home, the TAPS investigator recommends watching (or revisiting) John Carpenter‘s The Thing.
“That, for me, is required viewing not just at Halloween but all year around.”
