Ethel Cain is opening up about recent drama involving her online.

The 27-year-old “Western Nights” singer found herself in a feud with Lana Del Rey back in August, after the latter posted a snippet of an unreleased song rumored to be about her.

In a new interview, Ethel explains what went down and if she feels like she was being held accountable or if it was a transphobic attack against her, or both.

“It was so layered. The things from my past were hateful, and I was responsible for taking accountability no matter how they came to light,” Ethel shared with Cosmopolitan. “But it was strange addressing it because I have intimate knowledge of this campaign against me. While some of those screenshots were mine to bear the brunt of responsibility for, the people who leaked them were not leaking them with any kind of sense of justice in mind. They were leaked to hurt me.”

“It does make me worried to know that people can hate you that bad, and I wonder where it ends. This smear campaign has been attempted for years but never gained traction,” she continued. “But now that there are more eyes on me, it did gain traction and there are people that are willing to believe slander of that nature.”

Ethel also addressed her fans defending her, and if they are very parasocial.

“They defend me at times when I’m appreciative of it, and then they also defend me at times that I shouldn’t be defended….I am a complex person. I’m deeply flawed. I’ve made a lot of mistakes. And I also try to be a better person every day,” she said. “But in prioritizing openness and honesty and giving all of myself to people, in thinking that it makes me a good person, I have accidentally, without realizing, created a parasocial environment with my fan base where I think they have more claim to me than they actually do.”
