During the appearance, he was asked about Tucker Carlson‘s conspiracy theory that he is “fake gay” and that he was “dating women just a few years ago.”
“He’s not gay at all,” Tucker said, adding that he’d ask Pete “very specific questions about gay sex” if he ever came on his show.
“I mean, in a weird way, I guess it’s progress?” Pete said in response to the clip.
Pete then reflected on his journey before coming out, and at the time thinking he “would have done anything to not be gay.”
Eventually, he decided to come out as gay after serving his time in the military, regardless of how it impacted his career.
“So, to now be at a point where a right wing personality — his big conspiracy theory is that I’m secretly straight…is kind of hilarious, right? I guess that’s progress?”
Pete met his now husband Chasten Glezman on Hinge in 2015 while he was mayor of South Bend, Ind. They tied the knot three years later. They adopted twins Penelope and Gus in 2021.
Pete Buttigieg also revealed his thoughts on not being picked at former Vice President Kamala Harris‘ 2024 Presidential Election running mate, despite being her first choice.
