6-7! 41! Across the country Gen Alpha kids are driving teachers and the adults of their lives crazy by shouting these seemingly random numbers ad nauseam.
But what, if anything, do these numbers mean? Well, that’s the thing. There is no definitive answer to that question, though there are some different explanations floating around online.
We’ve compiled them to better explain where these numerical memes originated and whether or not you should be concerned if your kid starts saying them.
Keep reading to find out more…
Six-seven came first
To start, the meme “6-7″ is actually pronounced as two individual numbers and not “sixty-seven.”
The trend started with the song “Doot Doot (6 7)” by Skrilla. Since it was released in February, people on the internet have taken the song and run wild with it, reports Parents.
Skrilla‘s song became even more popular when TikTok editors began using it in edits, like this one, for NBA player LaMelo Ball, who happens to be 6 foot 7 inches.
Since then, it has taken on a few meanings, but most seem to agree that it means something is “so-so,” usually accompanied by the familiar gesture where you place your hand palm down and rotate it from side to side. Because of the LaMelo edits, it is also sometimes used to describe someone tall.
41 is the newer trend
Unlike 6-7, “41″ is actually pronounced “forty-one.” It also stems from a song, specifically Blizzi Boi‘s aptly named “41 Song.” The lyrics are rife with mentions of the number.
TikTok creator Mr. Lindsay attempted to explain the 41 trend in a video, attributing another creator, Hooperville, with creating the hand movement that goes with it, as shown in this video.
@mr_lindsay_sped If you’re kids aren’t saying #41 yet, they will be soon! Is it the new #67 ? #41meme #41 #genalpha #genalphaslang #teachersoftiktok ♬ original sound – Mr. Lindsay
“Lots of people are saying it’s the new six-seven and it’s going to trend even more and even longer,” Mr. Lindsay said.
In short, both of these widespread memes are meant to be silly and indecipherable to adults. It’s not dissimilar to the days when numbers like “69″ and “420″ were equally popular. By comparison, 41 and 6-7 are much tamer.
