Mary-Margaret disclosed her 2007 diagnosis during the recent Dawson’s Creek reunion special published by Us Weekly. The 71-year-old actress revealed that she had resonated deeply with fellow star James Van Der Beek, who shared his own stage three colon cancer diagnosis in 2023.

“It was just about ready to break out of the wall. It could’ve been a terrible situation, but we caught it in time. My doctor said we dodged a bullet, and it was all because of early detection. Cancers are survivable, but go out and get screened — thankfully, that’s part of James’ journey,” she told the outlet.

On the show, Mary-Margaret played Gail Leery, mother of James‘s character Dawson Leery. The two have enjoyed a similarly close relationship in real life and she recalls the phone call when James told her about his cancer.

“Since [then], we’ve had multiple conversations that are very uplifting and spiritual. He knows I’ve got his back 100 percent. He’s going to get through this, and we’re all coming together,” Mary-Margaret said.

James recently shared more about his own cancer journey. Discover what he said here.
