Ryan Lochte is opening up about his sobriety journey.
The 40-year-old Olympian shared a video to his Instagram account on Friday (August 29) revealing that he went to rehab after struggling with substance abuse. Ryan revealed that he was in a “dark place” after his 2023 accident but says that since his time in rehab, he’s been feeling better.

“I wanted to share some positive updates in my life,” Ryan said in the video, going on to share that he was feeling “so happy” lately. Ryan says that his happiness comes from the fact that, as of recording the video, he’s 54 days sober.
Ryan says that his 2023 car accident left him in “a really dark place” and shares that he was suffering with “depression, loneliness and feeling like I was giving up in life.”
“Substance abuse isn’t a solution, it’s a distraction that makes things worse,” Ryan said, revealing that he made the decision to check himself into a recovery center. While discussing the “stigma” around substance abuse issues, Ryan said that he’s feeling better and feels “motivated” to continue working on himself and his recovery.
“I am bettering myself each day. If anyone out there is struggling, please know you’re not alone in this,” Ryan said in the video.
