Why ‘Family Law’ Season 4 Already Aired in Different Countries, Before the U.S. Premiere

The legal drama series Family Law is returning for season four TONIGHT (July 23) on The CW, though some fans around the world have already seen the season!

So, why is that?

Family Law is actually a Canadian television series that is distributed internationally by various networks, including The CW in the United States.

The show follows lawyer and recovering alcoholic Abigail Bianchi (Jewel Staite) struggling to put her career and family back together after hitting rock bottom. As a condition of her probation, Abby is forced to work at her estranged father Harry’s (Victor Garber) law firm.

The fourth season premiered on June 2, 2025 at Sky One in Germany, though it has not yet been given a Canadian release date. Despite network Global ordering season four in January 2024, the network still hasn’t aired it.

Several networks have begun licensing TV shows from international companies to cut back on the cost of creating original programming. These shows will usually air elsewhere first before debuting for American audiences.

You can watch the first three seasons of Family Law on The CW’s app. It’s available everywhere for free without a login and without a subscription.
