Joaquin Phoenix is opening up about a very strange interview he did on Late Show with David Letterman over a decade ago.
The 50-year-old actor looked on that appearance while returning to the show with new host Stephen Colbert on Tuesday (July 15).
If you didn’t know or forgot, Joaquin appeared on Late Show in February 2009, with a full beard and had a very awkward and weird interview, which did draw a lot of laughs from the audience. However, the actor was actually in character for his movie I’m Still Here.

“Yeah, it was strange, because in some ways it was a success and it was also just one of the worst nights of my life,” Joaquin told Colbert.
“As part of the promotion for a film that I had made, I was coming on the show, and so I was stuck,” he explained after sharing he already started with the persona prior to that Late Show appearance. “I had to keep it going.”
“When I came on the show with Dave, I originally did the pre-interview in character, and I realized that it was just a little silly,” Joaquin shared. “So I called them back and I said, ‘Listen, this is what I’m doing. I’m coming out here and I’m doing this whole thing. I just want Dave to like lacerate me, I just want it to be really dangerous.’”
He noted that he was trying to get a certain reaction from the public and thought it was “beneficial for no one to know except when needed” what was happening.
“It was horrible, it was so uncomfortable, I regret it,” he said, before apologizing. “I’ll never do it again. I’m so sorry.”
Joaquin did return to Late Show with David Letterman over a year after that awkward interview and explained what was going on and how it went.
