We now have a firm idea of when The Last of Us will return on HBO.

Season 1 debuted in 2023, and season 2 just wrapped up earlier this year in 2025. Now, the show has its sights set of the third season, and fans hoping it’ll be released next year won’t be happy.

Casey told Variety, “The series is definitely planned for 2027. [The Last of Us co-creator/EP Craig Mazin] is still working it out whether it will be two more seasons or one more long season. It hasn’t been decided yet, and I’m following Craig’s lead on that.”

He was also asked about the challenge of casting shakeups and lead changes. If you don’t know, Pedro Pascal‘s character died early in season 2, giving the reigns to Bella Ramsey‘s Ellie. Now, season three will feature another shift, focusing on Kaitlyn Dever‘s Abby.

When asked if it’s a challenge for them with these big switch-ups, Casey said, “Not from a marketing perspective, because I think the title is obviously helped by the video game, and now the first two seasons is pretty well established. I kind of appreciate shows that take things and do a show from a different point of view.”
