Just Jared chatted with Rishi and got to learn 10 fun facts about him that his fans might not already know!
If you don’t know, Rishi stars as Alphy Kottaram on Grantchester after joining in season 9.
This season on the show, Alphy (Nair) has finally found his place in Grantchester—and a brotherly bond with Geordie (Robson Green). But just as he begins to settle in, a new case leads him into unexpected romance and personal revelations. Meanwhile, Geordie faces tough choices as a father, and Cathy (Kacey Ainsworth) steps into a bold new chapter in her career, guided by Mrs. Chapman (Tessa Peake-Jones).
Check out 10 Fun Facts about Rishi below.
- I believe in the “work hard, play hard” lifestyle. I like to give everything I’ve got to a project for six months—and then take two months off to travel, reset, and explore new places. It gives me time to recharge and return creatively refreshed.
- I’m a huge Manchester United fan. Which means my childhood and teenage years were pretty sweet—domination and trophies galore. My adult life as a fan, however… in the famous words of José Mourinho: “I prefer not to speak.”
- My DNA is basically a spice rack. My mom’s from Punjab in the north of India, and my dad’s from Kerala in the south—so I grew up with butter chicken and masala dosa in the same household. Lucky me. Unlucky arteries.
- My favorite movie flips between The Godfather and The Godfather Part II. Depending on the day, I’m either feeling Marlon Brando or Robert De Niro—both, of course, accompanied by Al Pacino. Can it get better than that?
- My go to drink. If I’m out then I’ll start on a pint of Guinness, move onto a Gin, Soda & Lime and finish the night with an Old Fashioned. If at home, a glass of red or white wine depending on what I’m eating!

- I love cooking. But only on my days off. You’ll usually find me in the kitchen with soul music playing, a glass of red wine in hand, and me taking my sweet time. Cooking after a long day of filming? That I do not love.
- Acting has always been the dream. When I’m on set, it doesn’t feel like work—it feels like playing cops and robbers with my best mates, just with better costumes. Honestly, it feels like a cheat code to life.
- My phone is on silent 24/7. I can’t stand loud notification sounds, and don’t even get me started on keyboard clicks. If you really need a notification, put it on vibrate and spare the rest of us.
- Tandoori lamb chops are my all-time favorite dish. And yes, the mint yogurt on the side is absolutely non-negotiable.
- Travel is essential for me. I love experiencing new cultures, trying unfamiliar food, and seeing the world from different perspectives. It’s my way of staying connected—to the world and to myself.
Tune in to catch Grantchester on Sunday nights on PBS!
