Darren Star has created some pretty iconic TV shows over the years.
From Beverly Hills, 9021 to Sex and the City, Grosse Pointe and the most recent Emily In Paris.
Prior to Emily in Paris, Darren also had the TV Land hit Younger, which starred Sutton Foster, Peter Hermann, Hilary Duff, Debi Mazar, Miriam Shor, Nico Tortorella and more.
In a recent interview, Darren opened up about the streaming success of Younger on Netflix, and if he would return for a revival if asked.

“When I was doing Younger, it was made to be bingeable, every episode sort of had a cliffhanger. I thought, Oh, this could get on streaming, it’s going to feel very streamable and bingeable,” Darren told Deadline. “So I was hoping but you never know — I mean, my dream was to see the show get acquired by Netflix, and it was wonderful when it happened. I wasn’t sure, I could imagine how well it would do, but I just wanted it to have an opportunity to be seen, exposed to a wider audience.”
He touched on the show being on Hulu vs Netflix.
“I just feel like people weren’t finding it on Hulu,” he said. “It does speak to the power of Netflix and the algorithm, I guess, I really don’t know why it didn’t. People didn’t have an awareness, I remember it being on Hulu, and even I would have a hard time finding it. On Netflix, it was on my homepage.”
After it debuted on Netflix and became quite popular, Darren notes it was a “wonderful validation” of what he always thought the show could be.
“I hear about it, out in the world, there’s so much conversation around it,” he shared. “Once it landed on Netflix, it did sort of blow up among the majority of the audience, which is the majority of people out there that hadn’t seen it or were aware of it; they just assumed it was a new series.”
Darren‘s current show, Emily In Paris, is set up at Netflix show, but produced by MTV Entertainment Studios, which also produced Younger. If Netflix opted for a revival (“they haven’t approached me about it yet”) would Darren return?
“I would do some sort of revival,” Darren told Deadline. “It’s something I would be very excited to pursue, and just in these conversations I’ve had with the cast, it’s something they would be excited to do if the timing was right for everyone. I have to say, the cast had the most amazing chemistry with each other, and it was a real, delightful experience for all of us to make that show together.”
