Cynthia Erivo Responds to Backlash Over ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ Casting

Cynthia Erivo is brushing off all the criticism over her next role.

Back in February, it was announced that the 38-year-old Wicked star will be playing Jesus Christ in the Hollywood Bowl production of Jesus Christ Superstar this summer.

Following her casting, Cynthia has faced a lot of backlash from many conservatives, including a pastor, who called it “blasphemy” to cast a queer Black woman to play Jesus.

In a new interview, Cynthia laughed off the backlash, suggesting that the critics familiarize themselves with Andrew Lloyd Webber‘s work.

Keep reading to find out more…“Why not? You can’t please everyone,” Cynthia told Billboard. “It is legitimately a three-day performance at the Hollywood Bowl where I get to sing my face off. So hopefully they will come and realize, ‘Oh, it’s a musical, the gayest place on Earth.’”
