Sarah Paulson is staying positive amid the negative reviews for All’s Fair as she talks about the legal drama series and her upcoming return to American Horror Story after several seasons away.
The 50-year-old actress is playing the devious and foul-mouthed Carrington Lane on Hulu’s All’s Fair, the latest series in super-producer Ryan Murphy‘s ever-growing list of television projects.

But while fans are loving Sarah‘s role in the show in particular, critics have been less kind. The series received a 0% on Rotten Tomatoes when it debuted (though that has since been raised to 3) and was accompanied by scathing feedback.
“Does anybody like to get reviews from the critics that are not stellar? No,” the Ratched star told Variety. “It’s always a wild thing to put the thing you’ve been working on out into the world for people to determine its value. But I feel like what matters to me is the absolute unbridled joy and fun we have had making and promoting the show. There’s not a single thing or person in the world that could change that.”
To Sarah‘s point, even though critics might not like the show, it has been much better received by fans. It even earned an early second season renewal!
But soon she’ll have to pivot to darker roles once again with her highly-anticipated return to horror anthology series American Horror Story and a turn as the serial killer Aileen Wournos in the fourth season of Netflix’s Monster.
As for why she left the FX show behind for a while, Sarah says that it can be very challenging to simulate terror “for six months out of the year, every year.”
“Your body doesn’t know the difference between the real and imagined, at least not the way I work,” she explained. “If I’m terrified, I’m hyperventilating and I’m running from something, then I’m actually experiencing that.”
But knowing original stars like Jessica Lange, Evan Peters, Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Emma Roberts, and more are coming back made her return for season 13 a simple matter.
“I missed it, and I’m really looking forward to doing it again,” she says. “It was like this dovetailing of my longing for it and the idea that I would be reunited with [all of them] just came together at the right time,” Sarah shared.
New episodes of All’s Fair stream Tuesdays on Hulu. Sarah also got her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame! See photos from the event here.
