Here’s a synopsis: “When Joni’s best friend Gracie vanished at 14 during a séance, it haunted her. 27 years on, kids play a sinister game reenacting it until another girl goes missing. To uncover the truth, Joni must face her fears about that fateful night.”

The series stars Morgana O’Reilly as Joni Gray, alongside Harriet Walter as Pattie, Rudi Dharmalingam as Jay, Celia Pacquola as Ruth, Annie Maynard as Anita, Dan Spielman as Peter, Anne Tenney as Moira, and Chloe Brink as Mina.

The Guardian gives it a 2 out of 5, writing: “Atmospherically, Playing Gracie Darling is directed assuredly by Jonathan Brough (whose recent work includes Bay of Fires, Rosehaven and The End). And it is quite well acted, with a particularly strong, grounding lead performance from Morgana O’Reilly, who had a small but memorable role as a hotel employee in The White Lotus season three. But the writing in this series comes across as very self-conscious and overall the show feels fusty and antiquated.”

Good Housekeeping says: “The very best psychological thrillers are the ones you can’t stop watching – and Playing Gracie Darling is exactly that…we can almost guarantee you’ll be halting your nightly doomscroll and ignoring your phone…it tells the chilling story of a small-town girl who vanishes during a séance, a disappearance that sends shockwaves rippling through her hometown for decades – and it’s creepy indeed!”

Screen Hub gave it 4 out of 5, writing: “That sense that here maybe there are no firm answers, that what’s going on really is something beyond rational explanation, is what takes Playing Gracie Darling beyond the usual mystery cliches and makes it into a compelling – you might even say haunting – watch.”

DMT gives it 2.5 out of 5, and says: “If you have become addicted to the small-town murder mysteries that Netflix has been offering, this’ll be right up your alley. If you are immune to this trend, stay that way; you’re not missing out on anything monumental (maybe give Adolescence a try).”

You can watch it right here.
