Footage from the event, courtesy of Sky News, shows Kate dipping into a curtsy while holding eye contact with the 77-year-old royal, then doing it again for his 78-year-old spouse.

The Queen blew a kiss at Princess Kate, who smiled and said “hi” back.

Gestures of respect are very common within the royal family, including the curtsy.

In this case, it signified not only Kate‘s individual respect towards each royal family member, but also that she likely saw them for the first time that day, per People. If they don’t bow or curtsy, it’s likely because they did at another point in the day.

All British royal family members traditionally bow or curtsy to the King and Queen, including Prince William.

There’s even guidance for the public on the proper etiquette.

“The King and Queen meet thousands of people each year in the UK and overseas. Before meeting Their Majesties, many people ask how they should behave. The simple answer is that there are no obligatory codes of behaviour – just courtesy. However, many people wish to observe the traditional forms of greeting. For men this is a neck bow (from the head only) whilst women do a small curtsy. Other people prefer simply to shake hands in the usual way,” the official site reads.

Just a few days before, Kate Middleton turned heads with this public visit.
