Fans had quite the issue with the lighting in the hot new series Heated Rivalry on HBO Max.
Several complained that the show ran much darker than what was shown on Crave, the original streamer for the show, and the series’ creator Jacob Tierney addressed the issue, which has since been fixed, in a recent interview.

“It’s just a mistake. They’re fixing it. There’s no controversy,” Jacob told Evan Ross Katz for his Shut Up Evan Substack. “HBO Max bought the show and put it on the air within like three weeks. So there was a lot of panic to get this thing going and I think it was just an error.”
“The first person that called me was our cinematographer. He was like, ‘Why does it look so dark?’ And we talked to HBO right away,” he continued. “It was not HBO being like, ‘We need this nine shades darker.’ It was just a time issue.”
At the time of this post, it appears as though the lighting issue has now been fixed as multiple fans have taken to Twitter/X to celebrate the adjusted brightness in the series.
There were, in fact, several scenes that take place in dimly lit locations, such as hotel rooms or rooftops, where the Crave version streamed much brighter than the HBO Max version.
If you missed it, in that same interview Jacob addressed the show being released weekly and how the first season is still in post-production, as well as the possibility of a second season!
