“Trying on Shoes” was produced by Emile Haynie and Grant, and she wrote it with Emile, Grant and Amy Allen.
Fans quickly discovered through the lyrics that she actually teased the song months before with an Instagram caption: “Piss me off and I’ll turn it out.”
She also seemingly references a recent real-life moment that she shared on social media: “I knew I must’ve dropped my diary in the pool for a reason (Erased your every line),” she declares. Fans recalled that Tate posted an Instagram Story showcasing a diary she dropped in a pool in Bologna, Italy back in October.
“Tryin’ on shoes, puttin’ on glitter / Anything to make me a little less bitter / Favorite blue, take a pretty picture / Got you like, ‘F–k” / You’ll swear to God that I’m someone else,” Tate declares on the song.
“I was honestly just in the studio every day, figuring out what the epiphany of the year was, [and] what I was feeling,” she previously explained of the album during a Grammy U event in LA.
