The first single off Taylor Swift‘s brand new album The Life of a Showgirl is the song “The Fate of Ophelia” and it seemingly is about her relationship with fiance Travis Kelce.

If you’re wondering who Ophelia is and what happened to her… let’s fill you in. She’s an iconic character in Shakespeare‘s Hamlet who is believed to have committed suicide by drowning after descending into madness.

In her new song, Taylor sings about how she felt she was heading towards Ophelia’s fate, but she was saved by someone who came into her life.

Head inside to listen to the song and read the lyrics…

“And if you’d never come for me, I might’ve lingered in purgatory,” Taylor sings. She later adds that she’s “no longer drowning and deceived, all because you came for me.”

In the chorus of the song, Taylor sings, “I keep it one hundred / On the land, the sea, the sky / I pledge allegiance to your hands / Your team, your vibes / Don’t care where the hell you been / ‘Cause now you’re mine / It’s ’bout to be the sleepiest night / You’ve been dreaming of / The fate of Ophelia.”

After her years-long romance with Joe Alwyn and then her brief fling with Matty Healy, Taylor must have been feeling a lot of grief about her love life. Soon after, Travis came into her life and they’ve been living a whirlwind romance for the past two years… and now they’re engaged!
