In just the first day of release, Taylor sold 2.7 million pure copies of the album, already confirming that she’s going to have her biggest week ever with this album, according to Billboard. This includes both physical copies and digital downloads.
Taylor still has six more days to add to those numbers, plus the streams still have to be factored in to determine the number of units moved.
Adele currently holds the record for the biggest sales of all time with her 2015 album 25, which sold 3.38 million copies in its first week of release. That album earned 3.48 million album equivalent units with streaming factored in.
Billboard also reports that The Life of a Showgirl has also broken the record for most copies of a vinyl album sold in one week in the modern era, with more than 1.2 million copies already sold.
Taylor has explained the meanings and stories behind all 12 songs on the album.
