“The Jane Goodall Institute has learned this morning, Wednesday, October 1, 2025, that Dr. Jane Goodall DBE, UN Messenger of Peace and Founder of the Jane Goodall Institute has passed away due to natural causes. She was in California as part of her speaking tour in the United States,” they wrote on their official account.
“Dr. Goodall’s discoveries as an ethologist revolutionized science, and she was a tireless advocate for the protection and restoration of our natural world,” the statement concluded.
She first observed chimpanzees in Tanzania in 1960, and studied their interactions and habits for the next 60 years. She was also named a UN Messenger of Peace, and an honorary member of the World Future Council. She was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2025.
From her Institute: “Equipped with little more than a notebook, binoculars, and her fascination with wildlife, Jane Goodall braved a realm of unknowns to give the world a remarkable window into humankind’s closest living relatives. Through nearly 60 years of groundbreaking work, Dr. Jane Goodall has not only shown us the urgent need to protect chimpanzees from extinction; she has also redefined species conservation to include the needs of local people and the environment. Today she travels the world, speaking about the threats facing chimpanzees and environmental crises, urging each of us to take action on behalf of all living things and planet we share.”
Our thoughts are with Jane Goodall‘s loved ones at this incredibly difficult time. We have sadly lost many prominent figures in 2025.
