‘Father Figure’ Lyrics: Taylor Swift Seemingly Sings About Mentor Who Scorned Her & Scooter Braun Drama

Taylor Swift‘s new song “Father Figure” will definitely be one of the most talked-about tracks from her album The Life of a Showgirl.

The fourth song on the album interpolates the iconic George Michael song of the same name and he even has a writing credit on the song.

“Father Figure” seems to be told from the perspective of someone who was formerly Taylor‘s mentor… and we think we know who it’s about.

Taylor appears to be singing about her former record label head Scott Borchetta and how he sold her masters to Scooter Braun, which led to her re-recording her first six albums (though two of those re-releases still aren’t out yet).

Scooter Braun and Scott Borchetta

Taylor‘s feud with Scooter started in 2019 when the music mogul’s company Ithaca Holdings acquired her former record label Big Machine, which included the master recordings for her first six albums. At the time, Taylor said that she was not given a fair opportunity to buy the music herself.

Ithaca sold Taylor‘s catalog to Shamrock Capital in 2020 for a reported $300 million and that company sold the music back to Taylor in May 2025.

The new song “Father Figure” seems to be mainly about Scott.

“I’ll be your father figure / I drink that brown liquor / I can make deals with the devil / because my dick’s bigger / This love is pure profit / Just step into my office / I dry your tears with my sleeve / Leave it with me / I protect the family,” Taylor sings.

She seemingly addresses the fallout later in the song when the chorus changes to, “I was your father figure / We drank that brown liquor / You made a deal with this devil / Turns out my dick’s bigger… You pulled the wrong trigger / This empire belongs to me / Leave it with me / I protect the family.”

George Michael‘s estate has responded to the song already!
