According to the outlet, Doctor Who will continue on BBC, returning next year with a Christmas special penned by showrunner Russell T Davies. Plus, the seasons that ran on Disney+ will remain available to subscribers.

Lindsay Salt, director of drama, BBC, shared the following statement on the streamer’s decision: “We’d like to thank Disney+ for being terrific global partners and collaborators over the past two seasons, and for the upcoming The War Between the Land and the Sea.

“The BBC remains fully committed to Doctor Who, which continues to be one of our most loved dramas, and we are delighted that Russell T Davies has agreed to write us another spectacular Christmas special for 2026. We can assure fans, the Doctor is not going anywhere, and we will be announcing plans for the next series in due course which will ensure the TARDIS remains at the heart of the BBC.”

On the plus side, even though new episodes won’t be airing on Disney+, fans can rest assured that the BBC is still dedicated to producing new seasons. This will come as a relief after Russell‘s comments about the fate of Doctor Who being undecided.

The streaming service’s handling of the show coincided with Ncuti Gatwa‘s run as the titular Doctor, which came to an end during the Season 2 finale that aired this past May.

At the end of that episode, the character regenerates as Billie Piper, who previously played the beloved companion Rose Tyler. But BBC hasn’t officially confirmed if Billie is playing the new Doctor.
