Aileen was finally caught in January 1991 after a multi-state investigation, convicted of one the multiple murders and sentenced to death in 1992.

She later pled no contest to five other murders. She was on death row for six years before her execution by lethal injection in 2002.

According to Britannica, she declined a last meal and instead just had a cup of coffee.

Her finals words reportedly were: “I’d just like to say I’m sailing with the rock, and I’ll be back like Independence Day, with Jesus, June 6. Like the movie, big mother ship and all, I’ll be back.”

Here’s a synopsis of the Netflix doc: “Between 1989 and 1990, Aileen Wuornos murdered seven men across central Florida, a killing spree that ultimately landed her on death row. Her execution in 2002 marked the end of a tragic and complex life—one that demands reexamination through a modern lens. From BBC Studios Documentary Unit, NBC News Studios, and director Emily Turner, Aileen: Queen of the Serial Killers revisits Aileen’s story through powerful audio interviews with those who knew her best. Featuring remarkable archival footage of former Dateline correspondent Michele Gillen and never-before-seen death row interviews with Aileen herself, this documentary finally gives her a voice in her own story—offering new insight into what happened, and why.”

Aileen was abandoned at age 4 by her mother, and never met her dad. She was raised by her grandparents and allegedly endured physical and sexual abuse at home. She was reportedly raped at 14 and became pregnant, and had to give up the child for adoption. Eventually, her grandfather made her leave the house and she was forced to survive on sex work and crime while hitchhiking her way to Florida.

During the time of her murder spree, she was dating girlfriend Tyria Moore, who went on to work with police and record phone calls trying to get her to confess. Tyria later testified against Aileen in court.

“It’s so much easier to write off someone who’s done such heinous acts as a coldblooded murderer [rather than] a deeply damaged human. Actually, she was made, and that’s chilling,” the director told Tudum.

“I think especially in today’s world of quick fixes, we’re told how to think so much, and we’re told that the world exists in this paradigm of black-and-white. And actually it doesn’t. We want her to be either the hapless victim where society created her, and life just happened to her — or she’s this cold-blooded murderer. I don’t think either of them does her justice. She’s charismatic, and she’s a killer. … It’s just so much easier to be categorical. But that’s not life, is it?”
