The new Hulu movie Swiped is now streaming and is inspired by Whitney Wolfe Herd‘s story of founding the dating app Bumble, including her own journey of finding love.
Whitney got her start in tech while serving as the the Vice President of Marketing at Tinder and she eventually left the company after an allegedly toxic breakup with then-boyfriend Justin Mateen, one of the co-founders.
After a movie to Austin, Texas, Whitney started Bumble and the movie Swiped showed her meeting her husband at a bar. So, is that how things actually happened?

Whitney has been married to oil and gas heir Michael Herd since 2017. The couple met back in December 2013 and their love story didn’t exactly start the same way as it did in the movie.
In a Vogue profile about their wedding, it was revealed that Whitney met Michael while they were on vacation in Aspen, Colorado with their respective families ahead of Christmas.
“A mutual friend introduced them one afternoon. The next day, that same friend and Whitney came barreling down the slopes only to find Michael having a long, leisurely lunch on what was a very optimal ski day,” the profile noted.
“I sat down next to him and was giving him a hard time about wasting such amazing conditions,” Whitney told Vogue. “Michael admitted he didn’t know how to ski, and being from Utah and having grown up skiing, I was perplexed as to why someone who couldn’t ski would be on a ski vacation.”
Whitney helped Michael ski, but it turned out that he was already a pro. After the trip, they talked on the phone for hours, but didn’t see each other again until the end of January. They officially started dating on Valentine’s Day 2014 and got engaged in June 2016. The couple’s wedding took place in Southern Italy in 2017.
Whitney and Michael are now the parents to two children – son Bo, born in 2019, and son Henry, born in 2022.
Something that the movie did get right is that Michael is indeed a cowboy from Texas. He’s the heir to Herd Producing Company and owns a farm-to-table business called The Grove Kitchen & Gardens.
Whitney has had some celebs partner with her on Bumble over the years.
