Emma Watson Makes First Comments About Being Banned From Driving by UK Court

Emma Watson is breaking her silence on being banned from driving in the UK for six months.

If you don’t know the story, the 35-year-old Harry Potter star was reportedly caught going 38mph in a 30mph zone while driving last year on July 31, 2024 in Oxford, England. At the time, Emma already had 9 points on her license. As a result, she was made to pay a fine of $1,396, and was given a six month ban on driving.

Now, she’s making her first comments about the news, which made International headlines.

“I recently started riding a bicycle. Yes, I started riding a bicycle before my driving ban, but now it’s particularly fortuitous that I also ride a bicycle for that reason,” Emma said on an episode of the “On Purpose with Jay Shetty” podcast.

About how viral it went, Emma said, “I was getting phone calls. Like, it’s on the BBC, it was on international, worldwide news! I was like, ‘My shame….’ It is everywhere.” She added that many people reached out to her to say it had happened to them as well.

She then further explained why she might not have been as confident a driver, explaining, “When you worked on movies — I don’t know if people know this — they literally will not insure you to drive yourself to work. I’ve asked so many times. You have to be driven. It’s not a choice. Especially because they need you there down to the minute, basically, depending on what they have going on.”

“So I went from basically only driving myself on weekends or during holiday to when I became a student, driving myself all the time. I did not have the experience or skills, clearly, which I now will and do,” she said.
