WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD!
The movie starts with a cold case from the 1970s: Angela Hughes, the so-called “woman in white,” whose boyfriend Peter Mercer, ran off days after claiming it was at the hands of a masked burglar. We later learn he was responsible for the murder.
Penny Gray, a detective and early member of the club, knew he was guilty, but the police let him walk. To exact justice, Penny secretly killed him and buried his body in the Coopers Chase cemetery.
However, a new digging at the cemetery to develop the property uncovers the remains.
In the present day, shady property co-owner Tony Curran is bludgeoned to death.
His employee Bogdan (Henry Lloyd-Hughes), desperate to get back his passport back so he could see his sick mother in Poland, confesses to accidentally killing Tony in self-defense to Elizabeth’s husband Stephen (Jonathan Pryce), who is suffering from dementia, hence he assumes Stephen won’t remember, anyway.
Elizabeth later reveals that Stephen actually records all of their chess matches to improve his game, so Bodgan is taken into police custody with his confession now recorded.
Soon after, Tony’s partner Ian Ventham (David Tennant) is also killed, but this time by John Gray, Penny’s husband, who used fentanyl to stop him from exposing Penny’s past crime.
The emotional finale comes when John confesses and asks for one last moment with Penny. Elizabeth realizes he intends a double suicide, planning to inject both Penny and himself with fentanyl to avoid getting arrested, and lets him go, believing justice has already been served.
The film ends with their funeral, as Joyce officially joins the club, and Coopers Chase is saved when Joyce’s daughter buys the property.
The last scenes show the friends finding peace: Elizabeth is seen dancing with her husband, Ron is reconciling with his son Jason, and the group looks toward more mysteries ahead.
In conclusion, the murder round-up is as follows: Peter Mercer murdered Angela Hughes, Penny Grey murdered Peter Mercer, Bogdan Jankowski murdered Tony Curran, and John Grey murdered Ian Ventham.
