More details about Malcolm-Jamal Warner‘s tragic death have been confirmed by authorities in Costa Rica, where he was reportedly vacationing with his family.
He passed away on Sunday (July 20) at the age of 54 in an accidental drowning off the coast of Costa Rica, police confirmed to ABC News. He was formally identified by the police.

He passed away near a beach in Limon, Costa Rica called Cocles. He was unfortunately caught in a “high current” in the ocean.
His official cause of death has been listed as “asphyxia,” which is “when you don’t get enough oxygen in your body. Causes include allergic reactions, drowning and foreign objects blocking your airway,” according to the Cleveland Clinic.
He memorably portrayed Theo Huxtable from 1985-1992 on The Cosby Show, and his performance earned him an Emmy nomination.
Along with appearing in The Cosby Show, he also starred in Fox’s The Resident.
