The Judicial Investigation Agency of Costa Rica is confirming Malcolm-Jamal Warner‘s cause of death.

The actor, who rose to fame as Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show, tragically passed away while on vacation in Costa Rica on Sunday (July 20). At the time of his identification, Malcolm-Jamal‘s death was ruled as a drowning pending an autopsy.

The OIJ confirmed to PEOPLE on Tuesday (July 22) that an autopsy had been completed and Malcolm-Jamal‘s cause of death was confirmed.

According to the autopsy results, Malcolm-Jamal died as a result of accidental asphyxiation by submersion. The actor was swimming on the beach when it appears that a powerful current swept him under the water.
